A 35-year-old woman held for violent crime in the Netherlands has escaped from prison after digging her way out with a spoon.

According to Dutch officials, the woman, who was being held for an unspecified violent crime, fled a prison Saturday night after tunneling out with a spoon.

The female prisoner escaped from a jail in the city of Breda in the southern Netherlands.
"She used a spoon to make the tunnel to escape on Sunday morning," Wim de Bruin, a spokesman for the Dutch Public Prosecution Service, said Wednesday.
According to Dutch media, the spoon-made tunnel was dug from a cell under the building's kitchen and its entrance was hidden by a hatch.

It is believed one or more accomplices helped her by loosening paving stones of the sidewalk next to the detention center, where the tunnel ended.

Police are still searching for the escaped convict.
